Oaxacan art is renowned for its vibrant, intricate craftsmanship rooted in centuries-old indigenous traditions, particularly those of the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples. The region is most famous for alebrijes—fantastical, brightly painted wooden carvings of mythical creatures originally popularized by artisans in villages like San Martín Tilcajete and Arrazola Oaxaca, also producing stunning hand-woven textiles from Teotitlán del Valle, where weavers use natural dyes like cochineal and indigo to create geometric rugs and tapestries, alongside green-glazed pottery, tin work, and elaborate folk paintings.
