Description

Gateway's Haunted Playhouse is an event produced by The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit charitable organization. Yes, the very same organization that creates all the performances and events you have likely attended and loved throughout its 70-plus years of operation. The Haunted Playhouse is one of The Gateway's largest annual fundraiser events.

The Gateway’s mission has always been to enrich a wide range of communities with quality theatrical experiences through diverse arts and entertainment, as well as educational and scholarship programs through The Gateway School for the Performing Arts. As an event of The Gateway, Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County, Gateway’s Haunted Playhouse utilizes the numerous theatrical designers, artists, technical staff, and our educational program at The Gateway, such as costumes, makeup and wigs, props, set design, lighting and special effects, directors, and much more. Additionally, dozens of professionally trained paid actors and highly trained, volunteer student actors drawn directly from the renowned training center, The Gateway School for the Performing Arts, rehearse each character that inhabits the haunt, giving it a unique, theatrical quality unrivaled on the island.

Each year, a new theme, path, and characters are created, giving patrons a brand new, three-dimensional experience as they explore the walkthrough attraction. The same expertise is brought outside the haunt, in our outdoor carnival-like queuing area, where the fun begins before the Haunt even starts! The Midway allows attendees to enjoy their wait while enjoying food, drinks, and attractions, instead of standing in line. Over 100 people are on hand every evening to ensure the smooth operation of each haunt.

2025 Theme - The dormant gas beneath Gateway’s cesspool was never meant to be disturbed, but when a septic crew unknowingly unleashed it, the air twisted minds and bodies alike. Some escaped with rashes and strange mutations, but none were the same. Rkyard J. Edmund suffered most, his humanity dissolving into something new — the Harvester. Taking control of Gateway, he turned the facility into the core of his vision, assigning roles to the altered crew and building a front company, Harvest Kleanzed Inc., to lure outsiders under the guise of cleanup work. Those who joined were taken captive and forced into his growing horde, discovering too late what he had been building in the shadows.

The Harvester’s reach spread across the island as his followers raided labs, stealing resources from Plum Island to refine the gas into a liquid he named BKR-79. His doctors injected it directly into victims’ brains, forging sharper, more violent transformations. The unwanted were cast into a gated yard, left as fodder to test the strength of new subjects, while chosen ones were torn apart and rebuilt with grafted flesh. Deep inside Gateway, the Harvester himself became a grotesque mass of living parts, ruling from a nest of bodies. His superiors are no longer men but engineered monstrosities — and one day, he intends for his creations to step out of secrecy and claim the world in his image.
